When did the Lord call you to himself?
I was raised hearing the Gospel. My parents were faithful servants of our local church, and I heard the Good News of Christ every Sunday. I was seven when the Holy Spirit convicted me of my sin and my personal need of a Savior. I was baptized shortly after. The early fruit of my salvation was a deep desire to serve God all of my life. The Lord had given me a new heart; however, for several years following, I lacked discipleship and tools in my Christian belt to cultivate fruit.
Around the age of 13, our church hired a youth pastor, Dennis Ellingburg, which meant his amazing wife Kristy became part of my life as well. Under his biblical teaching, I learned how to study God’s Word and how to practice spiritual disciplines. I now had working “tools” in my belt of salvation! I knew what sanctification meant and that was“all she wrote.” The Lord has only deepened my love for Him, His kingdom, and fighting the good fight ever since.
Why are you writing?
The truth and riches of the Word are beautiful and the source of Life. We know our Savior through them and He shapes us by them. Writing for me is processing. It helps me delve the depths of my own heart and it bolsters my understanding of the Word. These are two things I desire to spend my life doing this side of eternity. I’m excited to write alongside other sisters, as we spur one another and other women to love and know God’s truth. I pray that we all “may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:9-10).
Things you do when you’re not writing
I like to create things. I’m a dabbler. I like to make a spreadsheet for cleaning chores one minute and then paint a piece of furniture the next! I’m a little sporadic that way. At the root of all my “dabbling” is a common desire, which is to bring functionality, joy and beauty into our lives and the lives of others. My husband calls me, “Modification Mal.” After 7 1/2 years of marriage, he just smiles and shakes his head when I say, “I bought this today, and a I’m going to paint it and cut this part off.” 🙂
